We Can Rebuild Her
Better than she was before… Better, Stronger, Happier. A Breast Cancer Journal

Dear Dairy

Two months ago I sucked it up and cut yet another beloved food group from my diet.

Since then, my aching, stiff back, joints and limbs have kept me on 24×7 whine.

Last weekend, I finally clued in.

Since chemotherapy and chemo-induced menopause wreak havoc on bones, dumping dairy might not be the brightest move.

What a delicious development.

My general approach since starting chemo (waaay back in 2007 originally) has been to eat what I want and as much of it as I can manage, because otherwise I tend to lose weight with every treatment. Now, I've been diabetic for almost 20 years, so that keeps things a bit more sane (no six-packs of doughnuts for me), but I *love* cheese, so I certainly haven't been avoiding dairy.

It sounds a bit crass, but whenever people have accosted me with all the contradictory diet and alternative health advice that inevitably comes in whenever someone reveals they have cancer, I think (and sometimes say), “Well, my chances of getting cancer right now are 100%, so I'm not too worried about potential incremental increases in risk at the moment.”

What I'm saying is, it's surprisingly easy to get caught up in the numbers and analysis and this-is-bad-for-you/that-is-good-for-you and not notice that, HEY, MY BODY NEEDS SOME FRICKIN' FOOD. And what kind of food that is may be less important than simply being fed and getting some fuel and maybe enjoying the experience.

Hurray for you! Enjoy. (And nice touch with the Arrested Development dairy-related quote in the hover text on the photo!)
